Unless otherwise noted, all of the information concerning
Spiritual Gifts has been compiled by me, John Lounsberry.
It is my desire that you will benefit from this information.
My first introduction to a Biblical teaching on Spiritual
Gifts was in a leadership conference of Basic Youth
Conflicts on the campus of UCLA in 1971. Since then, I have
come across other Bible teachers who have added their insight to my
understanding of the subject.
The material presented here is a compilation of over thirty years
of study and personal experience. Any place where an author or teacher
is quoted directly will be noted with quotation marks and
an acknowledgement of their contribution.
I would like to especially thank Jackson Snyder, for
allowing us to use his Spiritual Gifts Survey.

TEACHING
The following information concerning the Motivational gift of teaching, has been taken from
the writings of Bill Gothard.
The Greek word for teacher, didaskalos means master, teacher or doctor. The teacher
is one who communicates knowledge, guides, makes known or relays facts.
The person with the gift of teaching is not the person we often think of as a teacher in
the Sunday School class.
The TEACHER to whom I refer is the scholar, the person who learns and teaches with more depth
than the average Sunday School teacher.
TWO AREASThere are two areas for which the teacher lives: learning
and teaching (or writng if he teaches through the written medium). The teacher would rather gain
knowledge than eat, sleep or just about anything else.
The teacher must learn to teach in two manners which are contrary to his or her nature.
First, the material must be kept simple so that students can understand it. The students
normally do not have the hunger for knowledge that the person with the gift of teaching has.
Secondly, it must be kept practical, for the teacher will love knowledge whether it is in
practical form or not.
The most effective teacher is the one who can teach more than average knowledge and with more
than average simplicity. Many churches will not have a teacher at all while others may have only
one or two, depending on their community and church needs.
Most teachers (scholars) will be found in full time Christian vocations. The teaching gift
will involve (the lowest number of laymen (in its scholarly sense).
The most common place to find the believer with the gift of teaching is in a church with a
Bible Institute program, a Christian college or one which is near a publishing house for
Christian literature.
IMPORTANCE OF TEACHERS
We must have our gifted teachers to handle the interpretation problems, deeper theology and
to teach those with the other teaching gifts in a more complete manner. People with the gift of
teaching do not necessarily have to teach the Bible to be a help to the church ministry. The
teaching in such areas as education, business and finance or computers for example, may be of
great benefit in some chuches.
It must be remembered that the scholerly teacher is only one of four teaching or
communication gifts. The other three, the pastor, the prophet and the exhorter will sometimes
have to rely on resources from the teacher in order to fulfill their responsibilities in the
local church.
The problems that are seen most often in connection with the teaching gift are those created
by believers who have desires in other areas and find the teacher to be dull or too deep for
their liking. The blessing is that the teacher (scholar) can challenge us to learn more rather
than being complacent with what knowledge we think we already have.
Most teacher's aid books, reference'books and commentaries are written by people with the
gift of teaching.
